Our Story...
We were introduced to each other back in 2003 by a mutual friend, but shortly thereafter Jake flew off to Malawi and didn't return until 2007. That same friend reintroduced us in the summer of 2010 when Jake was busy finishing his school year and preparing to paint the last side of his parents' house… the “sunny side” to be exact. Hundreds of cedar shingles that were set to be hand scraped and/or power sanded then primed and painted by summer’s end, all before he returned to his fourth grade classroom.
Painting the sunny side wall is a lofty undertaking for ONE person, considering the pitch of the roof and the amount of prep it would take to get the wall "paint ready." But if you know anything about my future husband... no task is bigger than him. This became more evident to me daily. In my own life- I was about to start the summer show at the playhouse and well, bookings that summer were low... so, I offered to help paint that sunny side wall.
Now Jake spoke many times about his family's home. But it was not until I stepped foot on to the property that I understood his love affair with it. The house itself is an idyllic place that has many nooks and crannies to explore... and then there are the woods that surround it and the gorge just beyond where all his childhood memories began and his imagination rambled. It didn't take long for me to begin to fall in love with it or him. We spent a beautiful summer on that roof working together and there is no other experience to liken it to. We happened to catch each others' speed... and that is a rarity in this day and age. Each day was culminated with a "clink" of two beer bottles to a day's work well done. I was well aware that there was something unique occurring between us... 65 Old Readingsburg Road is the beginning of our "unusual" rooftop courtship and a very sincere friendship… and for these reasons we have chosen to get married on this property.
From the rooftop we realized our similarities and differences, as well as the lessons we had learned in life… thus far. We are supremely aware of the importance of having had such fine examples of human beings for parents, and furthermore their example of divine faith in marriage and divine faith in family… I am beginning to feel the magnitude of choosing to see another through to the end and the gravity of that pledge. As I have gotten to know Jake- I realize that I have encountered a man with the integrity of my own father- and quite honestly, I never thought I would. Jake and I came into each other's lives at a time when we started to believe that we may have to just "go it alone." And that has made this journey even more precious for both of us.
Jake proposed to me Christmas eve 2012… He had his mother’s engagement ring reset for me. So, it is Dana’s diamond I wear. Besides honoring me with this gift, and welcoming me into his family, he honored me by asking me to be with him. I said yes, how could I not- he is exceptional.
Which brings you to this site.
Because we are older-over the years we have acquired a lot more “material” things than a young couple. Both of us have towels, dishes, pots and pans from our various apartments so we have opted out of that kind of registry. But you could help us take a trip of a lifetime with this registry site which will kickstart our honeymoon!
This website is our “honeymoon” registry as Jake and I would like to take a European tour. We have already jumpstarted our honeymooning by purchasing our roundtrip tickets, but we need a bit of help on the rest.
We will be flying into Amsterdam and then moving intercontinentally between Lithuania, Belgium, Germany and Italy. Our registry will help us move about Europe (transportation) and Eat and Drink and Sleep!!! Our memories together will be priceless, and your assistance in helping us to get there appreciated beyond words.
The website is extremely user friendly and we have broken the trip down into excursions. You can click on any of the boxes and read about what your gift will be applied to. As I mentioned earlier we have already purchased our plane tickets!
So, now the ball is rolling and we are planning a wedding!!! Let me describe our day to you!
We have chosen to have an intimately laid back adult bbq on Saturday September 21, 2013. We will start the bbq at 3pm. Food will begin to be ready at this time so you are welcome to come and hang out, eat and drink. We will have our wedding ceremony at around 5pm. As our invited guests, you may bring gear to camp out overnight with us. There is plenty of space and appreciation for the adventurous. You may call Jake or myself directly or email us. If you are having any problem accessing our wedding website please enter the ENTIRE address http://www.jakeandmari.ourwedding.com - There are many "Jake and Mari's" out there... and they all seem to be getting married too!
Please be mindful of your wedding guest attire. This will be a casual adult affair… So, come as you are and be comfortable. We love you and we are excited to celebrate this momentous milestone with you.
I have already eluded to the importance of our folks to us… I must emphasize the intimacy of our day. Dana (Jake's mother) will be at home. Dana was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia at the age of 62. She is well aware that Jake and I are getting married and that I wear her ring. She may join us for the ceremony or not. She walks her home and her yard freely... and this has been key to her longevity. If you are not aware of the symptoms of FTD we ask that you please take a moment to familiarize yourself with them online.
My future mother-in-law, is loved dearly by her entire family, but it is the man she took a vow to who is seeing her through. Not because he has to, because he chose to... and he believes in that vow he took to her. I could be no more prouder of him than I am of my own father. And Dana has taught me as many lessons as my own mother's gentle toughness. I suppose one could make a judgement on a marriage from the outside, we are all guilty of that… but from my point of view, in the Wilson house, there is still an unfolding love story. A forty four year old marriage that everyday has a lesson or a test. That said, the care that Dana receives could only come from true love... and true love only has to try... it doesn't have to be perfect... it never will be... it just has to try.
I am so proud to wear this ring… and to marry Jake.
For all these reasons we will be celebrating our parents' marriages as much as our own on September 21, 2013. 65 Old Readingsburg Road Califon, New Jersey. We sincerely hope you will join us.

We're going to Holland, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Lithuania!
Our first stop is Amsterdam where we will navigate the canals, explore the museums, and celebrate our union in this unique city for the first two nights of our voyage. By train from there, we will proceed south into Belgium and spend a few romantic evenings in Brugge and Ghent. Continuing by rail, we hope to visit a famous Abbey or Belgian Brewery. Then on to Stuttgart, Germany, where we will visit some old friends and attend our first Oktoberfest celebration, the Volksfest. From Stuttgart we will continue by rail through the Swiss Alps to Florence. There we'll pick up a rental car and drive to a villa in the Tuscan hills. For 5 days we will relax by the fire, taste the cuisine, and embark on day trips through the region to the coast and beyond. We will drop off our rental car in Rome, spend a day and evening exploring the infamous sites before flying to Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. From Vilnius we'll head north by bus to the town where Jake taught as a Peace Corps Volunteer. In Birzai, we will visit old friends and memories, try the sauna, and visit the school where he taught English. After spending a night in Riga, we will fly back to Amsterdam and cap off our trip with a week-long stay in a rented apartment on a canal.
If the technology allows, we will provide you with photos and messages from abroad.
