Hey guys,

First of all, thank you for coming to our wedding. We know that some of you are traveling to Chicago from far away (although thankfully most of our family and friends still live here, near us). For us, a wedding registry was hard to put together, since we've been living as adults (at least in theory!) for quite a few years now, and we've got many of the physical things that make a house a home. That said, one of the reasons that we get along so well is that we both have a sense of curiosity and adventure about the world. We love to travel, to see new places and meet new people. So we're both looking forward to the opportunity to take a big, ambitious trip later this fall.

Kate and Kevin have talked about seeing South east Asia for sometime now, and we're especially looking forward to getting to know that part of the world now that change is happening so fast in the world.

While we're definitely getting ready to put some serious roots down here in Chicago, and growing a family with all of you, we want to bring a broader perspective of the world at large home with us. We'll make sure to send postcards to all of you from the different countries we get to visit, and of course we'll take a whole bunch of pictures. And then we'll come to your house for dinner and make you look at them all!

Thanks for checking this registry out, and thank you for being with us when we get married.

Love always,

Kate and Kevin

We're going to Hong Kong, Hanoi, Vientiane, Bangkok, Saigon!

We'll leave Chicago for a quick visit with friends in Los Angeles, and then jet off to Hong Kong for a few days. From there, we're going to Hanoi, Vientiane, Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Saigon, then back up to Hanoi to depart back to the United States.

About six years ago, there was an article in National Geographic, with a ten page photo essay on modern Hanoi and the rapid pace of change that was happening in Asia. The writer talked about the culture and tradition of the people and the region, the French influence and how much the nation has grown since the 1970's. With China rapidly expanding and the ripple effect that this is having around Asia, the writer suggested that, if one has the opportunity, to visit Vietnam in the next ten years, before it changes too much. Kate and Kevin have talked about that article, and how interesting that trip would be, as well as getting to know the other nations nearby. We've planned a trip that takes us through all of the key countries of Southeast Asia (excepting, sadly, Burma), and gives us the chance to get to know the capitals of these countries, while still seeing the countryside and the people, by taking trains between destinations.

Our hope is that we'll come back to Chicago with stamped passports, lots of photos, happy memories and great stories to tell. But also, we want to know what the rest of the world is like. Neither one of us has the time or the resources to stop and see an entire region (let alone the globe). We hope that this is the first of many trips around the planet, and that by seeing the world around us, we can be more informed citizens.

One night in a backpacker's hostel. Part of the fun of traveling for us is the adventure of staying somewhere that's a little more off the beaten path. Staying in a hostel puts us in the middle of a part of town we might not otherwise know!

Dinner, either seen at random on the street, or out of the guide book. Trying local meals, or foods we've never had before brings us closer to the place we're visiting, a way to connect with the people and the culture!

Coffee. Seriously, we're both coffee drinkers. Since the French brought the drink to South east Asia in the 1900's, the locals have made it their own, brewing it strong, with milk and sugar. We'll need at least two cups each to get moving in the morning!

Local transport. Motorbike, bicycle, bus and tram - how can you know a city if you don't take the bus? Rising public transportation, renting bicycles, and maybe - just maybe - a motorbike will get us around SE Asia.
