With New Year's Eve just after our wedding, where else would you want to be but in New York! Neither of us had ever been to New York and we aren't much for sitting on a beach for a week (especially since our small family wedding wasn't a taxing event). So New York it was!
As New York is not a cheap place to visit, we chose a Courtyard Marriott Hotel with good reviews and central location (just off 5th Ave) which was a great place to rest our feet each night. We were able to walk to Times Square and Rockefeller Center within about 10 minutes and yet it was quiet enough at night (we'd heard so many stories about the city that never sleeps!).
After researching Times Square for New Year's we decided that being fenced into a block for 6-7hrs without a bathroom didn't sound too appealing, so we wandered around early in the evening to see all the excitement but spent 9-1am at a little restaurant with a four course meal, live band, and a champagne toast at midnight. The rest of the week in New York we saw 2 Broadway shows, a taping of the Conan O'Brien Show and the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and a NJ Devils game. This was on top of all the tourist sights like the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Empire State Building, Central Park, many museums and all the beautiful little parts of New York like Soho & Little Italy.
The weather was great with only a few cold days and very little rain which was great to enjoy the city all decorated for the holiday season. Again, New York is not a cheap place to go but with built up points from work, we were able to get cheap flights from Victoria ($600) so the whole honeymoon including hotels, entertainment, a NY Pass, meals & gifts was just about $7000. We would definitely recommend New York to other honeymooners who want to experience an eclectic city with so much to offer each and every day and night... you'll have a hard time trying to take it all in!
